Steve Perez
 
Steve Perez began teaching at an early age and was a graduate from Teacher's College in Port-of-Spain.  He accepted a teaching position with the Hamilton - Wentworth Catholic School Board in 1966 and began his teaching assignment that year.
 
Steve obtained a Specialist Certificate in Music after graduating with a B.A. from McMaster University, and a M.Sc. degree in Education from Brock University.
 
A truly gifted musician, Steve functioned as as a music itinerant teacher, a music resource teacher, and an interim music consultant with the School Board where he assisted formulate the school board's music program.

Steve Perez introduced the steel pan to the school curriculum within the board, by initiating a Steel Pan course in the Grade 8 class, and organized a Steel band in the School.

 

In 1988, he was one of the leading members of the Silvertones Steel Band that performed at the Canadian pavilion at World EXPO in Brisbane, Australia.

 

Steve, and other Trinidadians like Horace Jeremie, Neville Blackman, and Carol Phillip helped lay the early groundwork for more recent steel bands like the Hamilton Youth Steel Orchestra (HYSO).

 

Steve continues to appear as a pan soloist at various venues in the community, including charitable functions and cultural organizations.
