PASS THE TORCH

Pass The Torch is an arts education program which has been in existence since 2004.

The objectives of the program are:

  • To broaden the learners’ understanding of calypso in order to foster an appreciation of the Caribbean and its music.

  • To provide an opportunity for a diverse group of learners to participate in telling their own stories to music.

  • To give the learners an opportunity to showcase their work to a wide variety of audiences, thereby building their confidence.

The participants have performed at a variety of venues and for a large cross section of people. They perform every year at Harbourfront and at the Children’s carnival during the summer.

Other venues include – seniors’ homes, Black History month celebrations, the Trinidad and Tobago consulate in Toronto, after school programs and at other community functions. The children are also encouraged to participate in fundraisers for other organisations.

Over the ten years, Pass The Torch has received funding from various sources including the Trillium Foundation, Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council. In addition, individuals and groups have provided financial and other kinds of support to the program.

Directors of Pass The Torch are John Perez (Jayson), Juno Award winner and Dick Lochan, author, calypsonian.

Pass The Torch has seven CDs to its credit.
